Reflection on ICT as informative tool

ICT in teaching and Learning

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog!

I understand well that students differ in many characteristics such as their backgrounds, interests,  knowledge on the particular topic, and the skills needed for acquiring knowledge.  All these factors create diversity in the classroom, which leads to the need for an education that includes all the students. I think Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools contribute to high quality lessons since they have potential to increase students' motivation, interest, connect students to many information sources, and it caters to needs of the different students. I firmly believe that ICT increases students’ motivation to learn just like it increases my motivation.

During my teaching practice, I have seen students running wildly  just because they have ICT class. They were so excited that they do not bother about anything, simply running excitedly to ICT room before even when the class starts. It is no wonder that students are so excited because we, as an adult are also attached terribly to the use of ICT tools. Moreover, they can definitely explore new things, eventually boosting their confidence and self-esteem and most importantly their creativity by using ICT tools.

In this reflection, I am going to reflect on five tools that we have learnt in our class.

1.      ICT as informative tool

As the topic itself suggest, ICT acts as a tool to get information. The computer can provide vast amount of information in various forms, such as text, graphics, sound and video. It provides raw material for students to organize, reorganize and expand their knowledge.

Teacher is the main source of information in the past and their knowledge is limited to the textbook. But with the development of our country, there is a development in technologies which make our work much easier. It makes our life more comfortable to live unlike the past without any technologies. All the reliable sources and materials around the world is uploaded in the internet and all those information are on the tip of our hand. In this way, ICT acts as a formative tool where everyone can gather the required information from the internet.

The subjects that we regularly study at school as well as at colleges such as science, mathematics, literature, history, dzongkha and geography are all integrated with informative tools such as text and images.

This is the image used in the class II mathematics book and we can clearly see that images are used as much as text so that students understand and learn better. Not just textbook, there are various kind of information on the internet representing in the forms of text, image, videos, graphics and many other forms. Through this tool, we will be able to grasp as many information and knowledge we need in our lives.

In one of the activities that we did in our class, we were asked to make a presentation on the topic 'Was Hitler a gay?'. Below is my presentation and the the link to my presentation.

While making this presentation, I came across various sources on Hitlers sexuality, some implying that he is actually gay but some denying that he is not definitely gay. After reading some materials, I came to the conclusion that Hitler, actually was gay because there is a evidence that had a peculiar relationship with men.

After making this presentation, I came to realize that ICT is very crucial to find the required information that we need. Without ICT, it is impossible to get the information on 'Was Hitler a gay?'. I believe, there is no such book that is particularly written on Hitlers sexuality but due to help of internet, there are various forms of information by different sources.

Not only ICT helps us to get information on our required subjects or module, it also helps to to get the information about our country and the world. For instance, the picture aside shows us the number of COVID-19 test update and we can instantly know the total number people tested positive with COVID-19.  From this, we can be regularly updated with the new information going viral around.

Moreover, we get to know things that are happening in and around the world just by sitting and clicking on the computer and our little smartphones. There is no physical difficulties involved and how lucky is that for us. Things that are happening around the world can be seen by us in the instant we open our computer and phone.

In the past, even if people wanted to know about the world, it was impossible for them because they did not have the luxury of having ICT that can connect the whole people around the world. Now, even if we do not want to know about the world, I think information are flooding rapidly and I just cant help think 'how lucky we are to be born in this century where things are very easy and comfortable'.

Therefore, for me, ICT as an informative tool is a blessing that shines the dark world of mine. We can get information in the blink of an eye in whatever ways we want through images, videos, text and many more.
